What exactly is a Haberdashery?!?!

Some history on the Fischers.

Well to be honest with you I really know very little about the Fischer’s, and we just didn’t get there before my mom was unable to recite stories to me. I can tell you that they owned a Haberdashery which totally explains why my grandmother Deloris had a formal gown store, in town, when my mom was growing up. I don’t have much experience with her either, meeting me was never her priority but one summer when I was spending time in Georgia with Uncle Richard and his then wife Debbie, as a family we drove down to Florida and saw her in Sebring, she was not really interested in connecting but I had a great time seeing the ocean for the first time. Years later she had been struggling with Alzheimer’s, my mom went down there to say goodbye, I guess life has a way of repeating itself.

“Susy Homemaker” (1963-64)

The age difference between my mom and my aunt was around 11 years so my aunt would teach my mom to make doll clothes for my mom’s dolls, this was their form of playing and bonding. Eventually they were together creating simple clothing for my mom, my aunt’s clothing was all handmade as well, early on in my mom’s life she was told that if she wanted to wear it, she would have to buy her own fabric and make it. This experience was especially poignant when my mom was in junior high school, back then it was a requirement for the girls to take Home Economics, sewing half of the year and the other half cooking. By this time my mom had been sewing and cooking for years so after the first assignment in sewing, a simple apron from a specific pattern, the teacher asked my mom to be her teachers aid and this title made it possible for her to sew whatever she wanted in class. My Mom would go on to create her own wardrobe leading into a life of sewing for herself, her family, and her community. In junior high is where she got her lifelong nickname, “Susy Homemaker.”

My mom would have laughed at this joke then rolled her eyes and said, “Ugh, Dallas… Walter… she’s your daughter today!”
