First Love and the Forbidden Motorcycle

1965-1966

It’s an age-old tale; girl meets boy and loses her damn mind. This is the story of one steadfast rule that was broken and with many regrets. When my mom was in junior high, she met and fell for Ronnie Riddle, a cute boy with a motorcycle. Her parents had one rule for dating, “no motorcycles” but as young girls do, she just had to ride on the back of that motorcycle. The ruse (an attempt to mislead by a false impression) was that she was headed to the park to hang out with friends and waiting for her was Ronnie and the forbidden motorcycle and away they went. Now everything would have been fine but the one thing to always remember when riding a motorcycle is not to touch the muffler. Yep, you guessed it, her calf touched that muffler, and she was immediately regretful of that forbidden ride. With a terrible burn on her leg, she decided not to ride that motorcycle any longer, but she kept seeing Ronnie. The heart wants what the heart wants.

Breaking curfew

(1967) junior year

First love doesn’t always last so after Ronnie and my mother went their separate ways life moved on, and moving on looks like new boys to choose from. Longing for a date with the popular football player, when she was 16 her wish finally came true when he asked her to go to a football game. Well… as teenagers do, they went “parking” (tisk, tisk, tisk) in his Volkswagen bug after the game. The tiny car did not have much room in the back seat and Arthur was a tall guy, so when he tried stretching out to get a better kissing angle, they heard a pop! No, it’s not what you would think, he was fine, but his car was not. He popped the seat off its tracking, and they had to figure out how he was going to drive her home and furthermore how to explain why she was late for her 10 O’clock curfew. Needless to say, she was not allowed to go out with this particular young man any longer. I sure hope the kisses were worth it.
